Characterization of chloramphenicol-resistant Haemophilus influenzae.
We examined nine chloramphenicol-resistant (minimal inhibitory concentration, greater than or equal to 15 micrograms/ml) Haemophilus influenzae strains isolated in various parts of the world to characterize the genetic and biochemical bases of the resistance; four were type b. All nine contained conjugative plasmids, ranging in molecular weight from 34 x 10(6) to 46 x 10(6), which encoded for r...

Levofloxacin resistance in Haemophilus influenzae has increased significantly in Taiwan, from 2.0% in 2004 to 24.3% in 2010 (p<0.001). Clinical and molecular investigations of 182 levofloxacin-resistant isolates revealed that the increase was mainly the result of the spread of several clones in the elderly population in different regions.

The unique structure of Haemophilus influenzae protein E reveals multiple binding sites for host factors.
Haemophilus influenzae protein E (PE) is a multifunctional adhesin involved in direct interactions with lung epithelial cells and host proteins, including plasminogen and the extracellular matrix proteins vitronectin and laminin. We recently crystallized PE and successfully collected X-ray diffraction data at 1.8 Å. Here, we solved the structure of a recombinant version of PE and analyzed diffe...
متن کاملDetection of ampicillin resistant Haemophilus influenzae in United Kingdom laboratories.
Susceptibility of Haemophilus influenzae clinical isolates to ampicillin reported by 23 laboratories, using a variety of methods, was compared with results obtained following retesting at The London Hospital Medical College. Beta lactamase production was not detected on initial isolation in 25 of 157 isolates (16%) found to be positive on retest. One hundred beta lactamase negative isolates, wh...
